Our faith has long been concerned with how the profane use of power can produce fearful, complacent, autocratic, and undemocratic norms. Our emphasis on freedom drives this concern, and how we promote that value is of central importance in not only our congregations, but also our country. In a time of rising authoritarianism, with diminished democratic balances, how can freedom guide us to resist, faithfully, today’s political swing toward fascism?
