Everybody Knows / Everybody Does

National Coming Out Day is close to 40 years old at this point, founded in 1988 by a psychologist and an activist. As the psychologist, Robert Eichberg, said: “Most people think they don’t know anyone gay or lesbian, and in fact, everybody does.” He and Jean O’Leary, a longtime lesbian activist, intended this yearly observance as a beacon of positivity in the darkest days of the AIDS epidemic. And after nearly four decades, that beacon is more necessary than ever. Coming out is not a one-time process, but a repeated practice of living safely, honestly and gloriously with each set of our beloved ones. Join Rainbow Ministry in exploring how UU values embrace all facets of this practice, in our congregational life but also in all intersecting circles of our beloved community.
