September 2025 – UU Conscious Consumers Monthly Challenge

Conscious Consumers Summer Sustainability Challenges:

It’s close to the end of summer but the days are still HOT!

Have you been drinking enough water? Have you been thinking enough about water?

This September remember that our water is precious, that every drop counts, and that less is more now more than ever!

The Conscious Consumer September Challenge is to think of all the ways you can save water in your daily life and then follow through on at least one idea. Can you shave a minute or two off your shower? Can you use less water in your laundry cycles? Can you finally get around to fixing that leaky faucet? Can you find a way to water your garden more efficiently or add a rain garden or rain barrel into your landscaping plan? Can you substitute a veggie burger for a beef patty? (It takes 1,800 gallons of water to produce one lb. of beef – you can take average showers every day for 3.5 months with 1,800 gallons of water!

Another September challenge is to help our water systems simply by buying less stuff. As you walk through all the tantalizing fall sales this year, remember that right now on this planet there are RIVERS jam-packed with plastic trash flowing around the world, BEACHES piled with mountains of clothing and shoes (many donated with good intent), and OCEANS with growing islands of floating garbage (Google “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”).

The Conscious Consumer mission is to raise awareness among members of how everyday consumption habits affect the interconnected web of existence, and to encourage members to adopt habits that can positively impact the following areas: climate change, conservation, human and animal welfare, and health.
