Celebration

Our Chalice Circle reflections this month:

“It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those
differences.” – Audre Lorde
What is a difference that you’ve struggled to celebrate? Should you celebrate it?

“People of our time are losing the power of celebration. Instead of celebrating we seek to be amused or entertained. Celebration is an active state, an act of expressing reverence or appreciation. To be entertained is a passive state–it is to receive pleasure afforded by an amusing act or a spectacle….
Celebration is a confrontation, giving attention to the transcendent meaning of one’s actions.” ― Abraham Joshua Heschel
When the last time you really celebrated something?

“I feel like our culture is so good at pulling other people down and being so judgmental, but there’s space for all of us to be who we are. There’s space for us to celebrate each other and root for each other and not take each other down.” – Tracee Ellis Ross
Who has celebrated you, or rooted for you, in your life?

“That’s the way I do things when I want to celebrate, I always plant a tree. And so I got an indigenous tree, called Nandi flame, it has this beautiful red flowers. When it is in flower it is like it is in flame.” – Wangari Maathai
What do you do, or what would you like to do, to celebrate?
