July Spiritual Theme – The Divine

Our Monthly Spiritual Themes guide our Chalice Circles, which are small, intentional groups of members and friends that gather for spiritual enrichment through personal sharing. For more information on Chalice Circles, please email Linda Benson at chalicecircles@uuprinceton.org.

Our Chalice Circle thoughts and questions around the theme of “The Divine” this month are:

“I need a God who is bigger and more nimble and mysterious than what I could understand and contrive. Otherwise it can feel like I am worshipping nothing more than my own ability to understand the divine.” ― Nadia Bolz-Weber

Does the Divine seem nimble and mysterious to you? How?

“Some one dear to one can be loved with human love; but an enemy can only be loved with divine love.” ― Leo Tolstoy

Does it help to think of an enemy being loved by the Divine? What does that sense foster in life?

“You can safely assume you’ve created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do.” ― Anne Lamott

What is the Divine’s relationship with people you love? People you don’t love? People to whom you are indifferent? Or, is the Divine larger than, or independent of, your relationships?

“I do not believe in God and I am not an atheist.” ― Albert Camus

Does your sense of the Divine sometimes involve contradictions? What is one?
