Covenant Circles

Covenant Circles Covenant Circles are groups of 7 to 10 people who meet monthly for an opening reading, personal check-in, topic discussion, check-out and closing reading. The topic each month is the same for all circles, so that all participants are involved in a greater conversation, congregation-wide. The circles are facilitated by members of the congregation who have trained for five months with our ministers. Circles start meeting in October through June, with some groups extending through August. Please see below for registration information. Newcomers during the year and others who sign up later in the year will be placed in groups as room is available. New groups will form as needed.

Among other things, small group ministry programs:

  • foster a more profound sense of community within the congregation
  • create a safe environment for personal expression
  • offer a spiritual setting for personal growth
  • effectively welcome newcomers into the congregation
  • provide a forum for discussion of topics as they arise in the world, in the congregation, and in our lives
  • allow group members to interact on a meaningful level.

Thandeka, a UU theologian, believes that 'Small Group Ministry is the hope of our movement, transforming our religious movement today.' In the last three years this ministry has been taken up by 70 percent of UU congregations. Many of them have found SGM to be transformational in the life of the congregation.

For more information please contact our ministers at the congregation office, 609/924-1604.

Upcoming Services

Blessing of the Waters

September 12, 2010 at 10:00 a.m.

Water is a fundamental element of life. Sages advise us to take on its qualities of humility (as it seeks the lowest levels) and persistence (as it wears eventually even  through rock). It also mingles companionably with other water without regard to place of origin. Let us celebrate our own mingling by  bringing water from home or travel, from a place that has fed your spirit.

Worship Leaders: Revs. Meg Barnhouse & Chris Reed
Worship Associate: Drake Baer
Music: Adult Choir, soloists, Marjorie Herman, Beth Ertz

Atonement in Practice

September 19, 2010 at 9:15 & 11:15 a.m.

Yesterday was Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement in the Jewish tradition. In our theological diversity we approach atonement from different practices: Yom Kippur services, Christian confessions, Buddhist right living, 12 Step making amends, daily prayer....

Some say that it is not one's feeling that brings or starts a practice, but rather one's intentional practice invites the feeling. How do we bring the practice of atonement into our lives? Why?

Worship Leader: Rev. Chris Reed
Worship Associate: Stephanie Hanzel Cohen
Music: John Bachalis—clarinet, Marjorie Herman, Beth Ertz

Reaching Beyond!

September 26, 2010 at 9:15 & 11:15 a.m.

Suzanne Fast and Jacqui C. Williams, of the "Beyond Categorical Thinking" team of the Unitarian Universalist Association will lead us in worship.   Dovetailing with their Saturday workshop, this service will address our often unconscious biases that prevent us from being open to those of different appearance, ability or socio-economic background from our own.  This service is an important part of the congregation's Ministerial Search process.  Come be part of it!

Guest Worship Leaders: Ministerial Search Committee
Worship Associate: Ron Campbell
Music: Marjorie Herman, Beth Ertz
