UU Legislative Ministry of New Jersey

UULMNJ WebsiteUnitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of New Jersey (ULMNJ) is an affiliation of 13 UU congregations in New Jersey aimed at impacting social justice and public policy issues in our state. Formalized in February 2009, it is currently conducting issue research on Economic Justice, Health Care, Environment, and Emerging Issues.

    The UUCP Action Team of the UULMNJ:
  • Supports the work of UULMNJ
  • Responds to requests for action from the UUCP co-liaisons
  • Invites other members of congregation to take part in specific action items
  • Finds creative ways to bring issues addressed by the UULMNJ to the UUCP congregation
  • Identifies congregational priority issues
  • Participates in fundraising efforts for UULMNJ
  • Encourages members to share personal experiences and knowledge with larger UULMNJ by writing newsletter articles, participating in training and regional events, joining task forces of interest, and letting UULMNJ know when to celebrate a success or address a concern

Action Team Mission: Recognizing that profound social change occurs through organized democratic action, this action team seeks to move members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton (UUCP) to effective advocacy and activism through communication of the salient issues driving the efforts of the UU Legislative Ministry of New Jersey, providing educational opportunities about such issues and policies, encouraging direct action to impact the legislative process around these issues, and initiating new efforts for issues identified and put forth by the congregation to UULMNJ.

    2010-2011 Measurable Objectives
  1. Provide prompt action-oriented opportunities encouraging congregation members to respond Action Alerts from UULMNJ, such as staffing an Action Table after services on Sunday for letter writing, visiting state legislators in support of an issue, and recruiting people to provide legislative testimony.
  2. Communicate timely, relevant UULMNJ information to UUCP Action Team members through email list and phone calls, as needed.
  3. Assist with the UULMNJ biennial survey of for input on social justice issues for the statewide public policy network to address.
  4. Ensure UUCP committee representation at all UULMNJ Plenary meetings
  5. Ensure UUCP receives reports of the ongoing efforts of UULMNJ and its own Action Team through regular articles in Skylights (at least 9 during the year)
  6. Publicize or provide at least one educational training event on how to be effective issue advocates, such as inviting UULMNJ Director Julia Hamilton to UUCP to provide a sermon and lead a forum.
  7. Track these efforts through the year and evaluate the Action Team’s adequacy and effectiveness in meeting its mission the summer of 2011
